The focus of the season for the club is the FEAR (Field Events And Relays) competition, which is held against Cambridge in mid-February, traditionally at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre. This match is unique in athletics – it’s all about the team performance, with every event contested by four athletes from each university, with relays on the track and cumulative distances and heights totals on the field.
The individual focus during the winter is on the indoor BUCS Championships, which offers good quality competition against some of the best university athletes in the country. In recent years, the Dark Blues have ranked highly even against the Loughborough types, especially in the relays.
Both before and after these events, we take our athletes to indoor competitions from Cardiff to Lee Valley, Eton and Birmingham.
We like indoors, because they are never rainy.THE OUTDOOR SEASON
The Varsity Match. Need we say more.
(In case we do need to say more…it is the oldest athletics match in the world – even older than the Olympics – and if you win one it will be one of the best days of your university career. It happens in mid-May every year, alternating between mighty Fortress Iffley and Wilberforce Road.)
The BUCS Championships offer a chance to compete against the best in the country, even though they are normally held at the Bedford stadium, the windiest track in the world. This three day event is good fun, mainly because they give you those boxes to put your kit in before your race, which makes you feel like a bit of a pro.
We also field teams at the Oxfordshire County Championships, Town vs Gown and in the London Inter-Club Challenge, in which we join forces with Cambridge under the Achilles colours.
So… whether you are aiming to medal at BUCS, compete for your country, or just make it round the track, OUAC has many, many competitions for you. And the club will even ferry you to most of them in a stylish white minibus. Because we care.
