The Oxford Foundry

OUAC are very excited to announce that we have partnered with the Oxford Foundry (OXFO) for the academic year 2018/19 to run a speaker series entitled ‘Overcoming Adversity’. Supported by the OXFO Booster Grant, we are running four evening sessions during Hilary Term 2019 with various speakers from the field of athletics talking about their personal experiences with adversity in their sporting careers.

Adversity appears in many different forms and sometimes it can seem impossible to overcome. In sport, for example, we are constantly taking risks: risks of disappointment; of injury; of letting our team down. For some, these risks can become too much, which is what we are hoping to change with this series. There are four main areas that will be discussed:
• Mental health in sport
• Overcoming injury
• Transitioning from being a coach to an athlete
• Teaching coaching/officiating skills (possibly including how to adapt for para-athletes)

By organising this speaker series with the support of the Foundry, we hope to be able to equip people with the knowledge of how to look at adversity, how to evaluate, and surpass, the risks and obstacles we face both in sport and in everyday life (e.g. studying for your degree at Oxford).

This is a project we are very excited about, and we are looking forward to working in partnership with the Foundry to make this a successful series.
