Race2Walk at Iffley Road

On Sunday 7th August, Iffley Road hosted Kelly Hayes from NBC sports, who came to Oxford to race an 800 as part of his ‘Running Decathlon’. Raising money for spinal patients (find out more at http://bit.ly/2aDMo78), he is aiming to run 10 of the most prestigious track races ‘half as fast or in twice the time’. At Iffley Road, his target was the 800m WR of 1:40.91 set by David Rudisha at the 2012 Olympic Games – twice as fast giving Kelly a target of 3:20.

Ably assisted by OUAC’s Helene Greenwood (Cross-Country Women’s Captain ’16-’17) as pacemaker, Kelly finished in 3:12, a full 8 seconds under his target.

Many congratulations to Kelly on his 800 time, and we wish him the best of luck with the rest of his races and his fundraising. All money donated will be put towards purchasing a bionic exoskeleton to assist patients with spinal cord injuries to walk again, aiding their rehab and improving their quality of life.
