Athlete Taster Day 2023

On 16th November 2023, OUAC invited 35 year 11 and 12 state school students from around the country to visit Oxford. The aim was to give them a taste of what life is like at Oxford, especially as a member of OUAC. After advertising the opportunity for months and receiving an unprecedented number of applications, we were delighted to be able to give the students a day to remember. Below is a short summary of the day from the perspective of one of the students, Sam Lawson. Thank you to Sam for writing this, and we can only wish him, and the other students, the best of luck for their applications to Oxford. Register your interest now for our taster day in Autumn 2024!

Summary of the day by Samuel Lawson

My name is Sam Lawson, I am a year 12 student from Basildon, Essex and I wish to study Mathematics at university. I am also a 100m/200m sprinter for Basildon AC.

Having the opportunity to attend the taster day is something I will always be grateful for. I attended to gain an insight into life at university and to realise if Oxford was the place where I wanted to study at in the future, and I can now say that I have made up my mind!

The students taking a tour around Magdalen College

During the day I was given a surplus of information about the application process to Oxbridge, choosing your degree and college, and student life in Oxford. I was given a tour around Magdalen College (which was stunning) and I had a look at some other colleges and libraries while we walked around the city. And finally, I took a tour around Iffley Road Sports Centre to learn more about OUAC. As much as I would love to be a student at Oxford, I must say an athlete for OUAC sounds just as compelling!

The day was so useful to me, it answered so many questions I had about Oxbridge, and it has convinced me that I want to study and compete here. With all the support I received, it should hopefully make my application that little bit easier.
