Short Sprints

The Short Sprints squad is a fun, committed and diverse group of athletes. We are always looking for new members, so do come down and give it a try. Beyond training hard we are a social squad and organise events outside of training, like laser tag, bowling and Secret Santa.

We currently have two squads - the Blues and Seconds squad and the Development squad. There is fluidity between the two and training consists of a mixture of full team sessions and separate sessions for the squads. Our Blues and Seconds squad is aimed at those wishing to compete for the university. The Dev squad is for anyone who is new to the sport, returning to athletics or wanting to take training less seriously. This split allows coaches to tailor workouts to the individual needs and aims of athletes.

Blues & Seconds Squad

One of our bigger squads, this group trains with the aim of competing for OUAC in races across the indoor and outdoor seasons. The squad has two main weekday track sessions which are complimented by either circuits or strength and conditioning sessions twice a week. In the weekend, some athletes travel to Brunel University to train on the indoor track while others stay at Iffley to train. During Michaelmas term there are also hill sessions once a week.

Competitions start after Christmas in Hilary term. The indoor season culminates in BUCS and FEAR, our indoor varsity and athletes are encouraged to compete in several competitions leading up to this. During the Easter vacation the squad participates in OUAC’s warm weather training camp. This is a great way to get to know everyone else in the club, bond as a squad, and have fun training.  Our main season starts after Easter with outdoor competitions, again culminating in our Varsity match.

Development Squad

The Development squad is open to athletes of all levels and interest: whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced athlete who has taken some time off, you are more than welcome to join us and we will get you running at your best in no time! Although the group is mainly aimed at sprinters, a lot of the skills are transferrable to other disciplines and we will try our best to tailor the sessions to your needs. We also organise some fun social events (crazy golf, bowling etc) where people get to chill away from the track!
